Yay! Broody jap hen discovered today

Hope this girl hatches some chicks for you! I have a pair in each of my planted aviaries. The hens will go broody if I let them, and 2 actually build a nest of sorts at the base of some bamboo! I'll have to get pictures of them.

Sorry I've been busy, she gave up after about 10 days which was a bummer.... So those eggs got put in the compost

On other news, I made a home-made incubator and hatch one lonely chick

to be held and pats...
I say 'she' because this chick hatch from a round egg, so I'm waiting for her to grow up so I can sex her at hopefully 6 weeks!

I found poor Jewel

yesterday morning trapped underneath the mesh with her legs splayed out like this... I have definitely modified the incubator since to prevent this from happening again!!!

She also had curled toes on her right foot, so I looked up how to fix that by taping. So I have taken special care of her and have help fix her legs using legs splint. I actually found instructions on a google search which lead me to this forum but in the chicken section haha! They said it'd be too fidgety with quail chicks being so small, but I had to persist as gently as possible so as not to stress my chick. But this chick is tough!!

On her feet by herself and continuously building strength in her legs and walking better with her splint and foot bind on still on

I have left the other eggs there in case they're slow to hatch... They have a few more days before I discard them. I'm still hopeful!
