@Miss Lydia Revived this last year and I thought it seemed like a good idea. I guess I will do it this year since I just got my first egg for 2016: Greta (Black Swedish) is the girl with the work ethic and out of 10 girls, she was the only egg for today. Unfortunately the temp has been in the single digits at night at was low teens this morning, so by the time we found it it already froze enough that the shell was cracked

That is a Montana hazzard. If they lay them at 7:00 or so, we get them fine but if they lay them like 2:00am, they are frozen before the door opens (unless the duck sits on them).

You need to better train your girls to sit on them till you or Mama dux gets there to retrieve or better yet talk Tevyes into sitting on them.

What about that plan?

So far my girls will only sit on eggs when broody which leads to bad feathers, grumpy attitudes and no more eggs so that is a bad trade-off. Tevye has only laid two 20g eggs ever and he didn't sit on them. I think we will just have to live with some frozen eggs here and there.

I think so too. Frozen egg on the half shell.

My problem is once mine start laying I have to pry them off to even get an egg out from under them.

I've had some frozen eggs lately too!!! I turned the light off for a few nights last week when we had temps down to 11 or so. Now I've had it on again and only one layer!! I was getting 8-9 eggs from 12 hens and now just one from a new layer, one of my Cauuga girls.

Mine have really slowed down. For the past two months I've been getting a steady two eggs a day from my eight mature girls. Not sure which two are laying, but I'm glad at least a couple are. I need those yummy eggs to keep coming!

I got another egg from Greta today

She sat on it most of the time until the door opened, so when I got it, it was very cold but not frozen & cracked Yay! So I got a healthy 80g egg. Both yesterday's and todays were kind of skinny and long like her insides shrunk from lack of use. We will see if she is back to rounder eggs in a couple days hopefully.

OK, looks like I was lying

The first egg we guessed was Greta because she was walking around looking the most eggnant - the egg wasn't laid on camera... The second egg seemed to verify Greta since she sat on the egg most of the morning until the door opened (it was definitely the same duck both times because the egg is currently fairly elongated). I had a chance to review the camera footage and it is Rhiannon who is our current layer. It seems she laid the egg around 11:30 last night. When she was done, she sat on it and Tevye came over and cuddled her for about 1/2 hour then Kaine made Tevye move and Pocahontas made Rhiannon move. Kaine chased Tevye and Greta several times until Greta hid in the corner, on top of the egg. Looks like Kaine is starting up again

My first layer started laying in 2015. MY second layer started the morning of our coldest snap so far in 2016. They're both laying in the same nest. Every morning- two eggs next to each other in the nest.

Both hens have laid by 6am when i go out to do my ducky chores. On the coldest days both eggs were frozen.

I did some research on frozen eggs. They're ok to eat- freezing doesn't hurt them but they won't poof up baked goods or custards like non-frozen eggs. But if you're concerned about them it's ok to feed them to other pets or back to your flock.

Please please start a web series Days of our Ducks or General Duck Coop or something :).

Think of all the dramatic plotlines.
