We got both our chickens in May they were 2-3 weeks old. Our rooster and hen got sick in October with what I think was avian pox. Our hen did not lay any eggs during this time. I gave them vitamins and electrolytes-they showed no other symptoms but the black spots and our hen not paying for about 3 weeks. The last few eggs she has laid are oblong. We are in Texas and have been having lots of warm days and cold snaps so sometimes she lays and then when cold she does not. She is showing no other symptoms. What could be the problem?

Hey there Cassiopia89 I did some research into pointy eggs some time ago as I have a gal who has always laid pointy eggs.

I was not able to come up with any really conclusive answers and simply ended up with “it happens sometimes and nothing to worry about”; “it is the shape of the oviduct when the shell is forming” and “as long as they appear happy and healthy, have access to good feed and oyster shell, do not worry”.

These are a couple of examples from Dusty who is coming up to 3 years old, she is happy and healthy and has always laid eggs this shape:



 
Thanks so much! Everything I kept finding talked about infections. We just got over avian pox. My daughter hatched her from an egg at school and she and our rooster, Cat, are members of the family. Whenever something seems wrong my daughter gets very worried about them. I don't think any of us knew how close we would get to our pets. :)

I am not ruling out an issue entirely but just wanted to let you know that if she appears happy and healthy, pointy eggs can just happen and not be an indication of illness. As you are doing, I would just keep an eye on her. If the only sign of a possible issue is a pointy egg, I do not think you need to worry.

I hear ya with regards getting attached … I am a hopeless case when it comes to my gals, they are my babies and spoiled rotten
