Something in the egg?

I periodically search my property to see if the girls have laid in an odd spot. I found one today. I'm not sure how long it's been there or if it was laid and left or if she's sat on it at all. When I put a flashlight under it, it shows "something" that moves when I move the egg around and I'm now afraid to put it in my fridge or crack it open. The odds of it being a live chick are remote. But I still was wondering what you all think? Is it the yolk, rotten, or is something growing in there? How can I tell the difference?

When in doubt I put eggs in the garbage. I only use eggs I know are fresh/freshly laid for eating purposes.

sounds dead. It is only alive if it moves when you DO NOT move the egg. Otherwise, it's like the HEAPS of eggs I've thrown out ( and then cracked open to check ) from the incubator. The yolk moves about, there are rotten bits dead bits bits that were going to become a chick until they totally died. It all moves or at least a lot does.

For a chick to be a chick that will hatch, it has to move (sometimes it doesn't though) by itself. If it moves on it's own it's a goer. If you have to move it then that means nothing, sorry. I usually give ones that are in the incubator many chances to be alive and I just move the less likely to the back and the more likely to the front. As for out in the yard left on it's own it's not looking good at all.

Thanks, I appreciate these replies. I don't expect any chicks from my girls. They aren't the broody type (Rhode island reds and Barred Rock). But I was confused about this one that I found. It is going into the trash. Thanks again!

Don't count your barred rock out. I had a barred rock go broody and hatch out 4 silkie chicks.
