Duck Breed Focus - Mallard

Yes, Maine has extremely strict laws regarding mallards. Because I have 2 Canadian geese that I have to have permits for, Peep got tested. Had to get a fricken permit for her too. The upside to that, I don't have to clip her wing, they do it for me.... They also microchipped her.

ohhh then i might be ordering some eggs from you in the future if you do that sort of thing

, yes i do agree with the ide to breed her to a normal pattern male if thats all you can find, then you could breed one of the babies back to her and you should get some white if the trait is recessive.

In my case there are no other black mallards that are posted throughout the united states, so i looked into importing and all of that stuff but, thats way too much work. So i have to breed to normal males as well and I got normal pattern my first time and the last 2 times (this is being bred with a distant related male) i got a black and then a black and a normal color(Grey).

Right now Peep is just the flock leader. She's an excellent mother/brooder. She has huge clutches of blue eggs. Her favorite male is one of my welshies. One of her daughters has the same lovely blue eggs too.
Peep is definitely the flock leader. Despite being the smallest, she's the bossiest and loudest. When she first arrived, she was able to fly. Scared the bejesus out of me the first time she took off. When the wild mallards show up, she moves our ducks away from them and then follows the wild ones around!
There aren't mallards advertised around here because of the regulations attached. To order some in, I have to be permitted for them also...

I am a mallard breeder and I love the breed becuase of the vast range of personality they have . I breed black and grey mallards the black mallards were a really pickle for me becuase in one hatch about 5 years ago I just had a random black baby show up and I've never owned any black ducks except muscovies. Their plumage still has the grey pattern on the chest and on the tips of the wings but other than that they are dark brown and/or black I have hatched several of them but sometimes they don't produce any black offspring and just normal mallard grey offspring and I have to try again .
