Thanks, with that ghost barring that was my thoughts too. so now technically speaking, what are the blue chicks, mutts?

Thanks, i got them moved to the bigger brooder after they got fluffed up completely, i'll get some better pics and post them soon. been so busy with two family emergencies that while taking quail chicks out of the hatcher i heard chirping in my older 1502 (no see thought door on that one) and when i opened the door out ran one of the other 3 blue chicks, i'm happy they didn't get caught in the turners.

somehow i didn't wright them down on my 'move to hatcher' list

i went though every tray in both cabinets and made sure there weren't any other dates that weren't logged to prevent it happening again.

Well, since the roo is not a standard, SOP Marans, they could be mutts if he has anything else in him other than Marans.

If he is pure Marans, just mixed coloring, they would be non-standard or utility Marans.

Getting the barring and wheaten out will be problematic to get pure colors again, from what I understand of genetics....but you are going for egg color. Keep choosing the darkest layers and breed those to deepen egg color.

Congrats on the good hatch!

If you're looking to sell the chicks, I'd market them as blue birds that lay chocolate eggs. You don't have to label them Marans, or once someone is interested you can get more into the genetics. Some folks want to know the lineage of the birds, some don't care at all since they're only wanting layers and never going to breed. Or, you could call the pet quality blue Marans.

I keep telling myself I'm not going to set eggs quite yet......you all are making it hard!

i took a good many years off from raising animals and just farmed but my daughter wanted to get some chickens and we got everything back out and and now we keep two 1502 incubators and a hatcher up and running pretty much 24/7 i just pulled 211 quail out of the hatcher this morning along with 3 more wheaten Marans chicks. i have a 30x72 feet breeding barn and then a huge backyard flock at home so i try to sell enough eggs/chicks to cover feed, new equipment, upgrades, new breeds, etc.....
