Hi, I have a 6 year old EE hen with a swollen abdomen. She stopped laying about six months ago, so I don't think that she is egg bound. Her abdomen is not very tight, it is more squishy. Her swollen area is more protruding in the back than underneath her. When I felt inside her I didn't feel an egg. After that I gave her some tums and a hot soak, but I don't know what to do next! This has happened to her before, but it mysteriously got better! I want to help her, as it could be very serious. I just love her to death, she is my little chook!

You can not see the swelling very much in the picture below due to the feathers, but where my hand is, is the swelling.

She also tends to stand with her but hanging down (in the picture on the right) Sometimes it is more extreme.

It sounds like your hen is laying internally, instead of the eggs being laid they get deposited inside the abdomen, they can absorb them but sometimes it gets too much and an infection sets in. There's no treatment. You want to try to bring them out of lay by cutting the protein in their diet. Otherwise it's thought it happens more to fat hens, so I would put her on a diet. She's very pretty. They can sometimes live a long time if they aren't dropping eggs too often. Sometimes it can come down to quality of life. I have an older Orpington hen that has been doing this for three years, she seems to always be okay so I haven't culled her yet.

She doesn't look very uncomfortable, so I will put her on a low protein diet and hope she gets better!
