Hello, I have recently been looking into Cabots. The Pair that I will be purchasing will be off Ron Sumner's Imported Stock. The person with them is one of the top breeders in the United State's, so I'm positive that these birds are special. As I start to plan for these birds, I have ran across many Aviary concepts. I have decided to build a 12'x24' for the pair, keeping it planted. As I have been told, I need uto have 2 run ways in the pen with no opsticals so the male can chase the hen in a straight run, giving the hen a chance to move into the brush. I also will place a boulder in the pen, giving the male a place to overlook the aviary. These birds must be kept in a absolutely clean pen, as they can contribute respiratory problems. The house will be 6' wide by 12' long. This will have 1 hole going to the outside, so I can close it for a few weeks as the Chicks build their strength. This shed will be 8' high also, so I can place the box high up.I will also have a window for the shed for the winter months. The birds I am getting, are probably the last few that aren't related. If anyone knows, Ron Sumner imported 2-3 pairs from China and then later had 3 pairs imported from Glen Howe in Canada who also imported Cabots. If anyone wants any information about these wonderful birds, feel free to ask. I will help in anyway possible.

Sounds like you did your homework.I use washed masonry sand as a base in my pens, very easy to clean.I doubt they will use the house as most pheasants prefer to be outside, but there is always a chance that they will use it.I have temmincks and saytrs. Both male and female temm set, hatch and raise chicks. My saytrs have disappointed me this past year.No fertile eggs but the hen did set,so hopefully they will produce this year.Last year was their 1st year together so I am hoping that was the problem.
What other breeds do you raise?

Well, I actually hope they only use the house for shelter from the elements and for laying eggs. If I recall, Saytrs are a bird that one year you can raise a nice bunch and some years, you don't raise one. As the guy I'm purchasing cabots from, his cabots are going to be 3 this year. The birds they're 2nd year where just figuring out their breeding. So he produced none. He is hopeful that he'll produce chicks this year out of 3 unrelated pairs from Ron Sumners birds. I believe mine will be F2 Cabot Tragopans but I'm not 100%. Honestly, I cut back on 99% of my Pheasants. Currently I have a male Impeyan, after the hen died due to asperiosis, or another form of resptory disease. Luckily,I'm picking up a hen from a local breeder this weekend. I am making a trip down to Kurt Landigs in August to pick up a pair of amherst and a pair of goldens. I also will get a pair of amherst and goldens from Clarence Birr, which are Chengdu birds. The only Tragopans I'll be keeping is Cabots until next year, then I'll purchase a pair of Temmincks and Saytrs off of Jeff Bergers Imported Stock. All birds I keep and produce will be 100% pure birds.
Thanks,

You've picked a bunch of good reputable breeders to buy from.I have to call Kurt sometimes about a lewis silver male that I lost.He said there is a museum with every male birds except the lewis silver.

If you ever come across someone with line bred Richard Olsen Cabots, let me know. I called Kurt Sunday night, spent 3 hours on the phone. Main reason was I was trying to see if getting more Cabots from Glen Howe in Canada would be a smart decision. Lucky I found a GREAT Line of Ron's Stock. Now if I can get a pair of Richard Olsens lined up, I can provide true unrelated Cabot Tragopan Pairs. Plus Cabots are my 2nd favorite pheasant so just keeping them will be a privilege.

I bought one of Ron's original breeder or of cabots two yrs ago I also had a pr from Richard after he passed I have 3 very good prolific prs of satyr if you need any info on them let me know

Kevin----- that Lineated Kalij is doing great

Billy, call Larry Wieg---he is like the cabot king, he had like 20 of them when I was over there.
If you are going over to David's to get that impeyan, call me. I have Larry's #

I'll call tonight. I probably will end up getting a hold of Larry since he got some of Richards stock. Plus Kurt was telling me their orbital skin is a nice orange.
