My first try!! Day 18

Good! 4 successful chicks and 3 that didn't hatch, we broke them open and none of them was the yolk back in their belly. So would this mean they died a few days before hatching. But the other 4 seem to be doing well eating and drinking and sleeping

Sorry this is so late

Lovely to hear your 4 are doing well :clap

Yes it does sound like it could have been after lockdown but before they had chance to absorb the yolk. Here is an article you might like to check out ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/egg-failure-to-hatch-diagnosing-incubation-problems

What do you think the reason was for dying so late? I'm hatching now. It is day 24. I had 2 hatch on day 22, 2 on day 23 and I have 3 eggs left. Just went into day 24. I did the float test and they look like they are viable. This hatching thing is for the birds! Aaarg!

Hatching eggs can go 21 to 23 days depending on the heat and humidity used. When humidity is a problem a humidity pump will give you a more consistent and timely hatch. This is something we learned by trial and error. Consistent heat and humidity leads to a more timely and consistent hatch rate. It is not recommend but to keep your little ones from being sealed in and you are overdue because of a hardened she'll you can give them their own pip in the air sack. It will help you determine viability as far as a live bird. If you decide to go all the way which is no guarantee but it can be done be very gentle and methodical as to not skewer the new chick. They will need a place to dry off or they will expire. If they already have a pop water testing can actually drown your chick which is another note of caution. I hope this is a help to you. If not this hatch perhaps the next. I am sorry for your difficulties. We learned through our own mistakes and trial and error. It is traumatic to se0e baby animals expire despite intervention. That indicates you are a compassionate human being and no matter how this turns out experience in the future will help and cause less anxiety.
