New from North Louisiana

Thread Starter

Hello,  My name is Kim. I am so glad to have found this forum.  We have 3 grown children and 1 grandson with a new grand daughter due in July. We only have 1 spoiled rotten dog at the moment.  I am currently chickenless. My husband and I have 8 acres w/ pond. We are in the process of researching various breeds. Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome to BYC, Kim. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. With young grandchildren, you might want to consider one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (lap pets) such as Faverolles, Australorps, Orpingtons, Silkies, Cochins, Sussex, or Brahmas. Keep in mind however that there can always be an exception with any breed. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi Kim and welcome. 8 acres and no chickens yet? Goodness me, what havoc I would cause if I had that much space for chickens! big_smile.png

All the best in your chicken adventure - you and your family will love it I'm sure.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Did a moth know that the flame was going to change her life forever, or did she simply fly towards that heated embrace, knowing it would offer her something she couldn't give herself? In the end, the answer didn't really matter. The moth had never wanted the choice. -Joey W. Hill-
