Hello, My name is Kim. I am so glad to have found this forum. We have 3 grown children and 1 grandson with a new grand daughter due in July. We only have 1 spoiled rotten dog at the moment. I am currently chickenless. My husband and I have 8 acres w/ pond. We are in the process of researching various breeds. Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome to BYC, Kim. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. With young grandchildren, you might want to consider one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (lap pets) such as Faverolles, Australorps, Orpingtons, Silkies, Cochins, Sussex, or Brahmas. Keep in mind however that there can always be an exception with any breed. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi :welcome Kim

Glad you could join the flock! I'm a Kim too! :D Michael has left you some great advice and a great link for the learning centre to check out. Wishing you the very best of luck getting your chicken adventures started, I'm sure you will enjoy it very much and so will your grand children.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hi Kim and welcome. 8 acres and no chickens yet? Goodness me, what havoc I would cause if I had that much space for chickens! :D

All the best in your chicken adventure - you and your family will love it I'm sure.
