I'm looking forward to learn more about raising chickens. We have 5 children and are wanting to be able to raise are own food.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! The learning centre would be a great place for you to start. Here is the link ~https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
You have certainly come to the right place for all the learning. The learning centre has great articles on all aspects of keeping a flock happy, safe and healthy. It also has a lovely section on getting started too.

Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on Yorkshire coop; if you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Great to involve your children in the whole process of food, animals and what it takes to care for them responsibly. Well done you! They will never forget the experience, of that I am sure.

All the best

Raising poultry is a great hobby for the whole family and it's good for the kids to appreciate (and know) where their food comes from. If they enjoy the birds, this could be a hobby they can continue the rest of their lives.

If you're interested in 'meeting' other members in KY, you can find them here on your state thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
That can be a good resource for finding breeders, swap meets, how to deal with local weather concerns, etc.

Have fun!
