The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Better photos of my first little Coturnix.

The eggs were sent to me as silver/tuxedo with possible non-silvers - looks like that's what I have. Nice mix. Not entirely sure what each one is, but the majority certainly show the silver gene expression. Might have one white, got some tuxedos in there, not sure on the dark ones - pharoah, other? Can't wait to watch them feather in. So stinking cute. They're out exploring the enviornment today.

Should have some fraction of 100 Texas A&Ms hatching in the next 24-48 hours.

Planning to eat most of those, and use a few to add size to the silvers. Ultimate goal is jumbo silvers. Yummy and pretty.

I've had a few confusing conundrums in my flock. Still not certain as to what transpired.

I've got two Silkies that "appear" to be crossed with Easter Egger because they have the green legs. I don't know exactly what for sure because they are from the eggs I resurrected from the eggs of the predated girls. And the eggs could have inseminated prior to my getting the hens. It could happen, I guess. They are so tiny.

But I appear to have an EE cross with my OEGB. I'm pretty darn sure that's not possible. The chick came out of an OEGB pullet egg and it's half way between the size of the OEGB chicks and the EE chicks of that hatch. She's got the green legs and the coloring of the EE...but a bit more sass like the OEGB.

This is the size difference.

Mr. Peeperton and Mr Rock are on the messy board in the middle of the pic. That's the size difference. The OEGB pullets are same size as Mr Peeperton.
Yep... that's not going to work. Only thing I can see is the red bantam rooster sitting on the cage has EE but doesn't show it. At all.

So I dunno.

OMG too cute, I love it when they get to that goofy only a mother would love kind of stage. It's like they get so homely they are cute. I have some mixes about 3-4 weeks old that are just sooooo ugly right now
thats how old these guys are, I use the pre pro biotics I have tested it they feather and grow faster with it!!
and its cheap and goes far! oh and they all get grow gel for about 12 hours after hatch

Chick Pro and Pre Biotic vit cheap! I swear by them! 1st & 2 wks then ACV see post #1409
I had an easter egg hunt today!

I was out doing chicken chores when I heard a hen around the corner in an old shed--When I checked, I found that some of the TJ's hens had been using an old roll out nest box to lay eggs--There were 40 eggs in there!

I am off to float test and clean them now.

Silly Chickens!

Went to lowes yesterday spent 300 to build a new brooder. What's wrong with me lol. Will show pics when it's done. I got 30 three week old ready to go in it. It's gonna be much bigger they will love it. Also can use it as a breeding pen when no chicks.

Several years ago a talk was given at a poultry show. It had percentages over time of how many chicks would come from an old rooster and the new rooster. A lot of people did not understand and do not understand how chance and percentages work!

The interpretation was that chicks from the new rooster would take two weeks. That is not what was presented at the talk. You can still get chicks from the old rooster for more than 30 days! That was what was presented but the percentages messed people up.

If you really want to know that you have pure chicks, then you have to wait 6 weeks to collect eggs.

Sorry if that causes problems for breeders but that is how it works. Hens have glands that store sperm and keep them alive. That is the big difference between animals and birds.

A new rooster cannot blow out the old rooster stuff like cleaning out a hose. For one thing, there is no pressure with chicken mating. for another the glands collect it so what happens over time is that the old dies off and they new becomes a higher percentage. That leads to more of the new than the old but it does not stop the old rooster form being the sire.

So sory for your loss.
Maybe it was a group of raccoons?
I had a whole flock killed by them. It ended up being four juvenile raccoons.
They can also chew through chicken wire.

Maybe the white leghorn can be lily or teagan for a girl or andrew for a boy?

The duck is most likely a crested pekin duck. But a lot of different breeds can be crested.
that makes sense, nasty racoon's moved the top of the brooder. Lily, I like it!

Hi I'd like to join! I'll be setting my own eggs on March 5th, from a variety of hens paired up with CL & EEs roos. I'll update with pic/quantity on set date. Also I'm using an old incubator that I've had great success dry hatching in, put the eggs in, do nothing, 21 days later out pop the chicks:)
Welcome to the 2016 Easter Hatch A Long!

Think I'm going to join in, as long as I can find some eggs! Been crazy temperature swings here in Central New York. I know I can get some Wheaton Ameraucanas locally, but no success in finding non-hatchery, utility bred Wyandottes that I really want.

Was able to nail down some local Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs for the Hatch-a-long. Not sure how many I'll be getting, whatever the ladies decide to lay for the 10 days prior. Now to get some more to fill the 'bator at least partially. Looks like I'll have to try shipping some in, who here is in the Northeast with some cool hatching eggs? (Prefer purebreds, I have enough of my own mixed barnyard mutts)

Welcome to the 2016 Easter Hatch A Long!

I might join this time with goose eggs possibly three. If she lays them in time.

I'm throwing my feathered cap into the ring..

We've just hatched our first chickie and I think we're ready to get serious with this thing! Nothing fancy here: just barnyard crosses (Australorp roo + RIR, SLW, & an Ameraucana)

First chick of many, I hope!

Side note: We really don't know which eggs belong to which hen (except the Ameraucana of course). Any idea if this chick is a wyandotte or a RIR cross?
