I'm going to try hatching chicks in a homemade incubator. Can anyone give me their experience on incubating with the walmart brand,Acurite hygrometers? Were they accurate? How sucessful was your hatch? Thanks in advance!

I just started yesterday so I don't have any outstanding info! I can't say how accurate the humidity is, but I think mine gives consistently high temps by 2-4 degrees. I have another thermometer in there and am averaging.

Thanks! I actually ended up testimg with my friends hygrometer that has the sensor on the end of the wire, that goes inside and you read it outside, and an actual mercury thermometer. My first night test, and the mercury and friends read 100 and 99.9 all night, the walmart one read 106. I think being black is causing it to read higher. My eggs should be collected and ready to set on Monday, but I hope you keep me updated on how your hatch goes! How many did you set? What breed? Mine should be more brahma/buff orp mixes, and possibly ee.

I set on Wednesday afternoon after buying 2 RIR chicks and 6 Ameracaunas on Tuesday. My whole set up is DIY so it's taking everything I've got to wait until next week to candle them! I'm thinking of adding a THIRD thermometer bc there is just such a huge disparity in temps. But we are having a blizzard and I can't get out! My chicks have a $3 garden thermometer and I did put that in and it registered just under 100. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What kind of incubator do you have?

My walmart combo reads good. I have a mercury therm too. I just test the setu up before putting it in. It reads 3 deg off. So I adjust what I see by 3. And the hydro is acctualy spot on.

I will be using a home made incubator. I did a little tweaking today, moreso for the hygrometer. I added a little plexyglass shelf, and added velcro to it and on the bottom of the unit,as well as on the back where the magnet is. So now it's secure not only on the little shelf, but velcroed too! Lol! I didn't want it on the tray next to eggs possibly bumping them. I'm definitely keeping my kendall thermometer in there,i still think it reads better than the walmart. Like yours, mine is 6 degrees off. I moreso want it for the humidity which seems on par with my friends hygrometer i borrowed, plus or minus a few percent. 3 more days til I get my eggs! Excited! Oh,and I won't be candling mine as much as i'll be tempted to. I'm only going in to turn and add water if necessary

Glad to hear from someone else the hydro is spot on!
