I am really new to all of this. I live in Georgia north of Atlanta and my husband are getting chickens. The problem I am having is where to purchase our babies. We are only allowed 20 birds where we live and don't want to pay outrageous shipping charges if we can help it. I have been doing research like crazy and love Orpingtons, Sex Links, Wyandottes,and Amerecaunas. Any recommendations on how to get started and where to get our babies? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock! Type in Georgia in the search bar and look for it to be in the Where am I? Where are you? forum. Someone there has to have those breeds or know someone who does.

You could try craigslist with this time of year people are down sizing there flocks so that's when I got my chickens and added them to the flock and do u want adult birds that are about to lay or is already laying or just little baby chicks you could get baby chicks adult birds and or older birds that just need a good home on Craigslist hope you find some good ones

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Those are all great breeds and all the major hatcheries (Murray McMurray, Ideal Poultry, Cackle Hatchery, Dunlap Hatchery, etc. carry all of those breeds. Orpingtons are very calm and gentle (great lap pets) and Black Sex Links (Black Stars) are my personal favorites as they are very friendly and hardy laying machines that churn out more than 300 large brown eggs per hen per year. Welcome to ByC...... how exciting to be starting out with chickens.

do you already have your coop finished and ready to house your flock? If you don't plan and arrange for that. It will be no time at all before your local feed stores and also Tractor Supply will have their chickens in and for sale. If you don't find a breeder for the particular breeds you are looking for - you can go to a store and take some home. As a beginner -- you may want to start with fewer than your maximum limit and 'see how it goes'. Sex-links are excellent chickens if eggs is your primary objective. Both red and black sex-links.

You could also possibly check with your local county extension agent for some information and advice.

Take a look at those ads that people will put up on the bulletin board at your local feed store -- and of course all this is in addition to the suggestions already listed in this thread.

Welcome! Ideal Poultry has no minimum except $25 worth of chicks. Their shipping is reasonable too. Let us know what you end up with.

Thank you all so much for your input. We have a coop being given to us by some friends who have gotten out of raising chickens. My husband will get it next weekend. We are not starting off with 20 layers. We are thinking maybe 10 right now. I am just very excited to started. Is it too early to be starting this though? We live right outside Atlanta north of the city.
