hi i am reasonably new to owning chickens and am not quites experienced with the dos and donts of looking after chooks we give our chooks all of our natural food scraps and left overs and today we gave them some leftover bread which had become considerably mouldy, at the time i thought this was ok but then soon after i was browsing in the forum when i came across someone who was saying that mouldy food can kill chooks!

is this true? if so what should i do?

Mouldy food doesn't mean just one thing.  There are many different types of mould.  Some types can make people/chooks sick and some not so much.

I don't know whether there's anything you can do about food already eaten, but I wouldn't worry too much.  You'd have to be very unlucky to have had fed a "bad" strain of mould from one feeding.  (to put it in context, if you'd fed me a sandwich and it had a bit of mould on it, I wouldn't be rushing to any doctor.  If you'd fed me mouldy luncheon meat, I'd be bothered that I'd be in line for a nasty bout of gastric.)

I had the same question when we first got our chicks a two years ago.

With a few exceptions if we can eat the food in question chickens should also be able to eat it as well. One thing I was told was that chickens should not eat raw potatoes (or the greens or sprouts from potatoes) as they can be poisonous to chickens.

My general rule of thumb is that if I can eat it, and it's healthy for me, the chickens can eat it too. Hope that helps.
