Hi there!

I know that the minimum space for a chicken is 4 square feet. I was hoping to get 4 chickens this summer. However, I might only have a coop that is 4x4. Would that be too cramped for four chickens or would that be okay? I know the rule is to always go bigger and eventually, I probably will further down the road. I'm just wondering if I can have 4 chickens in a 4x4 coop or should I only put 3 chickens in there at the most? Thanks!

It will be fine for most breeds as long as you long get the really big breeds and remember 10 foot per bird if you are going to have a run.

We had a 4x4 (nest boxes extended out) with 4 hens in it our first year. They were fine except for winter. Ours dont like snow and refuse to go out. Then get bored and start pecking at each other.

Coop space all depends on the outside space. If they have 8 square feet per chicken of run, then 4 square feet is fine. If they will be in the coop 24/7 (which i do not recommend) you will need at least 12.

Sounds pretty good to me too. When you are partially covering that run you are not only trying to keep snow out of some of it but block the wind too. Mine normally stay in the coop for a couple of days when they wake up to a white world, but if a cold wind is blowing, they are not going out in it.
