One eye swollen shut - Wheezy Sneezy! Help - new chicken owner!

I am new to the chicken world. We got our first flock in May of 2015. We obtained the birds from friends; they have us birds that were already laying eggs. The summer went perfect. We have a nice sized fenced in run and as time went by we were able to let our birds free range our entire property without issues. Once the colder weather hit, the drama began.

We realized quickly the coop we purchased and were told could house up to 20 birds was absolutely false. We only have 11 and the pecking began.  Geri is our handicapped bird. She came to us with some sort of leg issue. We believe it must have been broken and healed badly when she was young. It slows her down and she can’t always keep up with the flock but she did great considering all summer. Once it was too cold to be outside all day (we are in MN) she was pecked bloody on her tail end and all her tail feathers were pulled out. We separated her to heal, and separated the worst bully bird Gloria. We then replaced our coop with one that is much bigger and more accessible. After a few days we were able to relocate Gloria the Bully back with the others and haven’t had pecking problems since.

A few days later our bird Oreo wasn’t acting normal so we put her in with Geri.  The weather was cold and we didn’t have another place to put her. We couldn’t tell how sick she was at first of course. We didn’t have a first aid kit so we’ve just been reading out of books and using YouTube to try and help her. We’ve had to order medical supplies as we learn/try new things.  She initially kept one eye closed. At first we wondered if she got pecked but it seemed to get worse and now it’s pretty swollen. We are thinking she has some sort of respiratory issue too. I really wanted to avoid antibiotics but I think she’s too far gone not to. 2 days ago I started putting Terramycin ointment in her eye and then giving her Duramycin 10 with a dropper.  She doesn’t seem to be getting better. The eye is still swollen and she is sneezy wheezy.  Is it too soon? I am just wondering if you have any insight or tips. Also, I have her swaddled like a baby when I tend to her eye and give her drops. She shakes. Is that normal??

I pulled Geri away from Oreo this morning and I am trying to integrate her with the rest of flock since we have warmer temps in the forecast. She seems happy as a lark and whatever Oreo has does not seem to be affecting Geri so I wasn’t overly concerned spreading it to the flock. They’ve been together for about 3 weeks. I hope I didn’t make a mistake moving her. I just don’t want to lose her too, and thought maybe Oreo would do better alone healing.

Please help if you can.

Welcome to BYC. Is there thick drainage or pus in the eye? Pictures can always be helpful. Pus or thick white drainage in the eye (if present) should be removed with saline, QTips, cotton, and tweezers. Tylan 50 injectable given orally 1 ml ORALLY twice a day for 5 days may be a little stronger than the Duramycin 10, but she also may not be getting enough of a dose. Eye swelling with wheezing and sneezing can be something like mycoplasma (MG) or coryza, but it also could be a virus complicated by a bacterial eye infection, such as E.coli. A vet will always best if they know about chickens, since they can prescribe the right antibiotics.

She hasn't had much drainage. This morning she did have a chunk of white stuff I was easily able to remove with a Qtip. For the first time in days I was actually able to see her eyeball. She also seemed a bit more perky so I am hopeful. She is eating and drinking on her own as well. Thanks for the tip on Tylan 50, I am going to add that to my first aid kit right away! I appreciate your response and advice!! Thank you!!
