My girls want a backyard aviary: Questions

Occasionally I do see a bird on the hardware cloth. My aviaries are pretty large though and generally they do not travel by the mesh but along the branches or just fly around.

I did say it was NOT recommended, but that we did use it. I would never want to take responsibility for someone following what I did and loosing their birds. What works for me may not work for others. Maybe it's due to me having well water and the lime has neutralized the wire, I don't know. But it's what we use and we have no poisoned birds.
 
Just a update. We built a new 12'x 8' aviary for the cockatiels and joined the old 8x8 budgie to the old 12x8 cockatiel aviary in a half sided U shape. So I suppose the curve of the new join added additional floor space. The budgies now have a huge aviary and as you can see from the pictures they do not spend much time on the mesh at all. Pressure treated is also not recommended, but again we did use it. We figured with having so much ventilation fumes from it would not be a issue and the birds do not chew it. We do not use pressure treated for boxes, those are made from non treated ply and some are painted with non toxic latex based paint since we are currently using a redesigned box and replacing all the old boxes with the new design as we make them.

I'm sure having chickens close to the aviaries is a NO NO too, but they enjoy foraging the beetles from the area. While I research and read a lot of great info, we do things our way. Our way works for us, but do as I say and not as I do.

Mcad I raise cockatiels outside year round here in N.H.I do poly their entire pen which is 6x12x8,but I do not provide any heat source for them.They will produce the proper amount of down to keep them warm thru the winter months as lond as there are no drafts blowing on them,they do fine.The snow piles up on the bottom of their pen and seals it nicely.Here are a few pics of my pens and birds,

We use heavy duty tarps and screw hooks. If it warms up we remove the tarps and put them back up at night. Florida has huge temperature swings from night to day during our so called winter.
