Hi eveyone! I am new to this thread. I just purchased 3 Blue Swedish ducks 5 days ago. They are approx. 9 months old. They are active, drinking water, swimming in their kiddie pool, but....not eating much at all!!! They ignore the food dish. They were on layer pellets at their previous home so that's what I have here. I have tried to coax them to eat by also putting some greens in their water, as well as cracked corn, oats, cooked mixed veggies, and even a bit of pasta in their dish. But they don't eat!! I'm worried. They have eaten some greens, but they virtually ignore the food dish.

Any advice? I'm just concerned because they are really not eating much of anything!

Thanks to you all,
Leanne

Hi, Leanne,

You and I are in the same boat. I adopted a couple of ducks yesterday and they haven't been eating much. In fact, I don't think they ate anything until late this morning.

I have begun to see that there is less food in their bowl, finally!

Of course, part of the backstory is that we had a 3 hour drive to get home, they need to be in quarantine for a while, so I have them in a 55 degree room. So they don't need to work hard to stay warm. They are drinking just great.

If yours are being active, seem content, and are pooping, then they are probably getting enough for now.

Keep offering a few special tidbits, keep up with the fresh water, and check back in frequently with us. I suspect they are just adjusting - I have read that ducks are not keen on change.

I know these two littles have had their lives upended quite a bit, and this is just one more strange part of the journey. I wish I could tell them they are home, now. They will just have to see for themselves over time.

Hi-I hope I'm replying to this correctly! Thanks for the response. We had a two hour drive and they are quarantined from our chickens for now, and now they are a flock of three instead of the much larger flock that they came from, so I understand the stress.

They seem to be okay as far as activity goes==swimming, drinking, starting to explore their surroundings a bit more. I too wish I could just tell them to relax and enjoy their new home. I guess they will eventually get it.

Thanks again for the encouragement!

Maybe try different types of food dishes ie black rubber food bowl, clear plastic bowl, pie dish. I place bowls of food in different areas of the pen. Maybe your new ducks are a little afraid of the new dish it may not be what they are use to. Also if they aren't to skittish maybe entice them with thawed peas on the ground near dish and then some in the bowl of food. They will eventually get it. Of course you worry until they finally get it. Good luck and enjoy your new ducks.

Thank you for the advice! I will maybe try a different bowl and see if that makes a difference. I enjoy them thoroughly although right now they won't let me anywhere near them!
