New to chickens and Florida!

Thread Starter

Hi All,

First let me thank everyone in advance for all the help I know I'm going to need!

My name is Courtney and I am brand new to the country life, chickens and to Florida!

My husband and I just moved from a tiny village in Upstate New York - where you could see into your neighbor's house and through it to their neighbor - to a 3-acre rural setting in Marion County, Florida.  It's all new to me!  Lizards, fleas, snakes, hot weather, septics, wells, hawks, owls, and a boar that chased me from the back pond to my driveway!!

I could go on but you get the idea!

When we bought the property a month ago it came with a coop & run and 7 chickens.  They looked crowded and miserable so I decided to give 5 to my mother-in-law and keep 2 - a RIR and an Austrolorp -much more manageable.

Having zero chicken knowledge I started searching the internet and found this site!   It has been an invaluable source of inspiration and information.  The girls now have better bedding, a dust bath with DE for the mites, a treat ball, fresh greens every day, a new feeder and waterer (nipple style that stays clean!) Spoiled already.  Next up:  a new coop!  Look for me on that forum soon . . . .

Hi Courtney!

Welcome to your new adventure too!  How exciting!  Sounds like you have already been doing some reading here...been to the Learning Center?  http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center   This would be a great place to get your coop design!

There's lots of friendly folks around here!  Nice to meet you!

:welcome  glad you have joined us, and congrats on your new home and flock.

Sounds like you are quite rural.  Don't know I could deal with the wild boars!   But people in our rural areas can't even grow veggies on a deck because of those fellas.

Don't know how long you have been there but if recent, the upcoming weather in the summer will show you real hot/humid weather :(

The Tampa area is the only place i have visited that is as hot and humid in the summer as here in middle GA.

Enjoy the forums.

Hi and welcome to BYC. Sounds like you have exciting times ahead. All the best with your new coop build - just make it a lot bigger than you initially intend, cos i guarantee you are going to want more chickens in the near future!

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
