Can I clip their wings yet? I'm hoping the experts here can tell me how old these 2 youngsters are from the pics, and if they're old enough to clip their wings. Metzer's website says not to do it until they are 15 weeks, and I suspect these 2 aren't quite that old yet. We just got them 2 days ago and the person we got them from had no idea how old they were, but claimed they had never flown. Is the 15 weeks minimum because they are blood feathers and can't be clipped? Or is it because they'll grow a new set of flight feathers, so we can clip them now and then just clip them again later?
Well, one of them went on an adventure this morning. She flew over several houses, a road, and into a large gulch. Her first flight* was longer than the Wright Brothers'. 4 hours later (with topo map, compass, and SAR skills) I located her, and with the help of a nearby chicken farmer caught her and brought her back home.
Mahalo for your help!
P.S. Sorry to post a pic of a filthy pool deck, I'm going to go hose it down now :)
*Actually last night was their first flight, they flew up on a shed and we shoed them back down and into their pen. The one managed to get out this morning when my wife was letting our older one out into the yard, she now knows to be careful about that. Their pen is 6'x10' and is fully enclosed with a shade cloth roof. They should be safe for now but I don't want to keep them confined to the pen for too long and don't want to have any more accidental releases before their wings are clipped!
