What do hatcheries do with the males?

I don't see the difference between ordering from Sand Hill and ordering straight run from any other hatchery? Isn't the problem that most folks want pullets, not cockerels? Myself, that's why I order from a hatchery, to get all pullets. I can hatch out enough cockerels all on my ownsome, thank you very much. I don't need a hatchery to send me a bunch of males I'll have to deal with later.

Buying from a breeder means getting straight run chicks, or older birds that can be sexed by sight. And the breeder still has to deal with the excess cockerels somehow.

Hi, there, All - yes, I know the males are killed in droves. I don't have a problem with culling in general - I know it is necessary. What I meant by 'humane' was instant death, not huddled together in the snow in a metal barrel slowly freezing to death. I just couldn't believe that they are dumped by the thousands to freeze, bake in the sun and dehydrate til death, or left for scavengers to rip apart. Not sure how people can do that every day, but it's their job I suppose.

VERY interested in the egg gender identification tech! Hopefully the hatcheries will get on board ASAP.

This is a harsh reality of life unfortunately. But I just think of all the chicks I order and give good homes to. I can have roosters so I always order a few and let them live a great free range life before culling. Sadly if we thought how cows and pigs were killed for grocery store meat. You would never want to eat it. That's why I eat a lot of chicken. But I buy grocery store meat as well. In life sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. But ya if they are throwing them in a barrel to freeze. They should be reported that's just unacceptable. But you also can't Believe everything you read.
