New to chickens in London UK

Thanks guys! I will certainly keep updating on my hatches. Can I post pictures yet? I'll find out. Of my current hatch, of 5 cream legbar eggs and 4 LF silkies that made it to lock down, I have 4 legbars (3 pullets and a very pale male) and 1 silkie hatch. There is movement and sound in the other eggs, so I'm hopeful for more to hatch. The first three CL hatched on day 20 and the first silkie hatched on day 22, I thought silkies would hatch earlier if anything?

CTKen, I have lots of family in Kenya, mostly around Nairobi, my mother is half Kenyan and was born there. You could guess my age pretty well by when Henry Rono was showing up the rest of the world.

Actually my day maths isn't very good, I am just coming up for the end of day 21, so silkies aren't late, legbars where just early. Is that normal? It would seem to be a good trait for a production breed.
My chicken maths went something like:
I want about 6 layers and a small broody troupe of silkies, so maybe 9 hens total, approx 50% hatch rate, so 18, but half would be males, so 36... And then I started thinking about brown eggs.. Blue eggs..
Chicken maths is alive and well.

Ah, thats good to know. I'm sure you must have been here before? And yep, i can get your age roughly. Your silkies should give you a better hatch rate than 50% don't you think? - i understand that they are great broodies. Even with my kienyeji hens i get 90% hatch rates.

Either way, sounds like you have got your plan sorted kabisa!

Begining to understand the forum tools!
I would hope to get better than 50% from silkies yes, sorry that wasn't clear. I am hatching posted eggs, so I have been approximating 50% hatch rate from incubated posted eggs. So far my most mature chickens are my four remaining Ross broilers (87 days old today) besides their immaturity I think I'd be lucky to get eggs to last 5 minutes with them!
I visited Kenya a few times when I was under 5 and have some amazing memories of mangoes the size of my head and playing freely in my grandparent garden, "just come straight back to mummy if you see a snake". I also spent 4 months in Kenya when I was 19, doing a fairly typical gap year thing, I stayed at a school in the Nandi valley and then traveled around a fair bit. Kenya has to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world, I'm hoping to visit again soon!
