I have a big mixed free range flock. We only keep them in an electric fence in the winter. We keep the friendly roosters and it's very important to have roosters because we have a LOT of predators in our area. They have saved our hens on multiple occasions. We don't keep any mean or roosters that are rough on the hens. We have a Bresse flock, with one rooster, a Buckeye flock (Our show and breeding flock) with three roosters, and 4 Bielefelder roosters, 1 speckled sussex rooster ( who isn't long for this world because he is starting to become aggressive) 1 very old New Hampshire too, a pure bred black Ameraucana rooster, and 4 Cochin roosters ( which do nothing but look good in 4-H shows and are fluffy snuggle bugs) But that is with about 140 hens. It is a good ratio with the hens. (we have a small egg business and sell to a natural market). So, our roosters play a very important role in our flock, Protection from predators.
