We decided to raise some chickens in our suburban neighborhood back yard. We are located in the Bay area and picked up our 3 one day old baby chicks just 2 days ago. I've done a lot of research and so far so good but much like a new mom I find myself googling everything they do just to be sure their behavior is normal... that's when I came across this website.

If you haven't already, check out the Learning Center. There are some really helpful articles there that can help you out.

And if you have questions, always feel free to ask (we were all new once).

Good luck to you and thanks for joining us!

Hi, welcome and congrats on your new chicks. We've all been there in the sense of worrying over chicks, and trying our best to do whats right. You have come to the right place for sure, so buckle up and enjoy the BYC ride!!!

Cheers

I'm also in Calif. Central Cal though by the Sierra National Forest.
This is the first time I've had chicks in almost 20 years...
I've always seemed to have gotten adults (rescues), so I haven't really needed to get babies.
I'm down to my last 2 adult hens, Gertie (BR) & Velvet (Ameraucana) and they are getting pretty old which is the reason for getting chicks.

My avatar is my girl's coop, their run is on the back. Placed between my barn and my dogs yard to help keep predators from getting to my girls
like that polecat did when I had my girls at my neighbor's coop...while my coop was being built.
Anyway, I've been reading here for about a week after I got my 9 chicks at the feed store (they are 1 week & 1 day old now,, and apparently unvaccinated

which makes me very nervous about their health & longevity).

I have 10 French Black Copper Marans (they will be vaccinated) being shipped the end of this month and due to arrive the 1st week of March. I hope the weather cooperates!

Thank you all for your posts which have helped me remember so many things and learn a bunch of new things.

This is how I set up my brooder

Notice how the water bottle is up off the floor of the brooder ....

The paper on the wire mess floor is only there to reflect the light for the photo opp ..

Little chicks are a lot of fun. They grow fast so have your camera ready!

It's nice to have you here.
