Hey all. Looking at getting a house in a few months (already have te closing date, just waiting for it to be officiall) and I am wanting to do a small to medium sized coop in the back. My first intension was for a few (3-5) chickens for eggs, but as I delv deeper and deeper into poultry, I am finding myself pulled more towards other fowl such as pheasents (so far my favorite!) and maybe ducks.

The plan is to have a 'coop' that is 6 feet deep by 8 feet wide in a fenced in area of about 12x18 constructed with solid composit fencing 3 feet high, then a rounded top (8+ feet) that should be made of chicken wire with a tarp 'roof' to hel protect from excessive rain, snow, or sun.

The golden and impeyan pheasents are what really has my interest so I will be pecking around, probably asking some annoying newbie questions. Please be easy on me. =)

WELCOME!!
Everyone here is wonderful!
My advice to you is to build your coop AS BIG as you can.
At least twice the size of what you think you want.
Best of luck with the move. How very exciting!

Well, in a perfect world I would have 5 acres of land. Unfortunately the house I am getting has a fairly small back yard that will need to be shared with a veggie garden, a fabrication workshop (i love building animal enclosures), a screened in porch for humans, and a combo kitty porch/aviary for my future aracari. The space of the coop kind of depends on the space I have available, as well as the fencing supplies. The composite fence I am using come in 3x6 pannels and attatch to T-posts so cannot be cut to fit. That is why the dimensions are 12x18. 2 pannels deep and 3 pannels long. Plans may change of course, but that is the plan for now. =)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken and don't know much about pheasants (never had any), but definitely post on our Pheasant section in Other Backyard Poultry under the Forum and take advantage of our pheasant experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thanks! I still would love to entertain the idea of 3 beautiful bantems for eggs, but I hear that pheasents and chickens don't get along too well.

Well Bantam eggs aren't very large so probably 2-3 bantam eggs would = one regular chicken egg. By the way, I wouldn't count on chicken(poultry) wire for fencing anything, much too easy for predators to get right through it.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I'll let the conversations continue between yourself and other members, i just wanted to greet and welcome you.

All the best

Hardware cloth is much better for predator-proofing than chicken wire...it is more expensive to begin with but better than getting a new flock. Chicken wire is good for keeping birds in but doesn't do much to keep anything else out.

Good luck to you, hope you enjoy the pheasants!

Well, I don't eat a ton of eggs, so size doesn't matter much.

What kind of fencing do you suggest?

X2 on the hardware cloth.
