My rooster has started attacking me!

Hi everyone. I'm new to keeping chickens. I have 2 white Sussex and a rooster. Originally we were told they were all hens but it turns out 1 is a rooster. We've only recently started to get eggs. The rooster has started to attack me! This morning he ran at me and got into the back hall. This is the most aggressive he's been. It can last for a few minutes and can be quite vicious. Can anyone tell me why and will this be his usual behaviour or will he grow out of it??!! Maeve

He is protecting the hens. Many/not all roosters are aggressive and it often just gets worse. My advice is to make chicken soup.

Glad you could join the flock! I'm afraid I have to agree that you don't need to put up with this behaivour from him and if he were mine he would be culled. He sounds like he has reached maturity and is now showing that he is boss not only of his girls but you too. I would also consider getting rid of him due to you only having 2 hens. 1 roo can easily handle 8-10 hens but only having 2 could cause him to over breed your girls and the roo can cause quite a lot of damage in doing so. I had the same encounter with 2 of our previous roosters, they became soup. If your not breeding them I would look into a laid back rooster my americana rooster has worked well for keeping the girls in line and lets me go in anytime I want to clean or feed even take eggs. Also you need about 6 or more chickens to 1 rooster, just my opinion it keeps my guys busy so they aren't looking at me as a threat.
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Once a rooster has turned aggressive it is almost impossible to break them from it. I would strongly advise getting rid of him as you don't want to risk him injuring someone, nor do you want to breed aggression into your flock. If you want a rooster for breeding, there are loads of unwanted roosters available on the market and you can always find a gentle one. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. Hi, and welcome to BYC. I have to agree with other members - being an adolescent jerk is one thing, but they can become accustomed to acting in that manner. Crock pot i say. I'm not sure if you have a family or have kids visiting, but either way - you could be looking at a little more than a few scratches - and for what?
