i live on 4 aches outside of the city and am wanting to start to get some egg laying chickens. Just not sure where to start? can any one give me some ideas? where i live the winter are really cold .

Welcome to BYC from your neighbor just to the south in NW Montana. Glad you decided to join our flock. I would suggest typing Alberta into the blue Search box at the top of the page and inquiring of those in the Alberta threads there. Hopefully someone in your area can help you locate some chickens. As for breeds, Alaska Backyard Chickens has a list of recommended breeds for Alaska at http://akchickens.org/getting-started/recommended-breeds/. If these breeds can handle Alaska's brutal winters, they should do fine in Alberta as well. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

glad you have joined us.

Did a search and there are a number of members near you.

Most breeds are cold hardy, heat is a problem we deal with in my area.

I would suggest starting you own thread under "where are you, where am I" and post the question of best breeds to folks in your area.

Good luck in your new adventure.

Hi and welcome - you already have some great advice so i'll just say a big hello!

All the best

I've heard Chantaclers where bred in Canada to handle the cold weather, they have flat laying combs that are very resistant to frostbite. If you venture to "Jest Another Day in Pear-a- Dice" thread started by Tara - she can tell you all about Chantaclers, she breeds them and they handle her brutal weather just fine.

x2 on Sunflour's comments...chickens deal with the cold better than the heat (and we have a lot of heat here in FL). Whatever breeds you get, watch out for large combs as they can get frostbite.

It's nice to have you join us!
