Keeping them out of landscaping?

We have 3.5 acres of varied grass/bushes/woods, etc but of course the chickens only want to go to the landscaped beds in front of the house and dig up all the mulch which drives my husband crazy. Is there anyway to deter them besides putting fencing around the landscape beds? I think it would look pretty tacky. Thanks!!

Electric fences are portable. They're a bit pricey up front but so nice as a predator deterrent and confinement for birds. I've got a 165' x 4' poultry net with hotgate. Takes me about an hour to move it. Time depends on how many trees and bushes I'm putting fence around. My coop is portable if pulled by lawn tractor so they can be moved every 2 to 3 weeks to fresh forage.

I dumped some extra chips along my perimeter fence just to fill in a low area and I noticed my birds visited my landscaped beds on the other side of the yard much less. The chips were closer to the coop and in an area of better cover so I think they preferred foraging there to the beds.

I bet that if you gave them another area that was just as or even more appealing to them that they would be more apt to leave your landscaping alone. You could put up temporary mesh fencing around your beds to further encourage them to forage elsewhere and toss scratch in the new area to get them interested there.

This is what I was thinking. you have plenty of space, it's not like you are dealing with a small suburban back yard. You may need some re-training for the birds, they're powerful creatures of habit. I'd set up a mulched area specifically for them, and I'd put up a temporary fence around the flowerbeds. Yep, it may not look the greatest, but you should only need it for a month or so before they get used to going somewhere else. Make that new area nice and tempting, perhaps even construct a temporary fence to keep them there for a week or so. Scratch thrown out there is a wonderful idea. You could also "seed" the area with some worms, etc until the natural insect population gets up and running.

How nice to have that much space to work with!

I love the idea of another mulch area. I might have to do some temporary fencing. Right now it is just 2 of the chickens who have been digging it up. I'm afraid they will teach the others and then I'll have a real mess on my hands!!

I keep my chickens out of my gardens with a two foot tall green coated wire fence, I have never had one jump over it. It's fairly cheap, bendable and easy to work with. We have put it around many different beds.

It blends in pretty well, not sure why the chickens don't go over it but they don't.

I use the same around my little veggie garden and it keeps them out.
