I hatched this little cutie yesterday and her legs were just fine, today they are upright and the knee joint is all red and swollen. What happened to her for this to happen? Is there anything I can do to help? I feel like she's in pain.

Can you get a picture of her hocks? What happens when she tries to stand, can she bare weight? Do the knees bend? At first glance it almost looks like splay leg, possibly a slipped tendon. But hard to tell from this pic.

There is an almost identical case of this called "chick won't walk on feet" earlier today on the emergency forum if you would like to read it. I had said to start some poultry vitamins or B Complex containing riboflavin in case of deficiency, and kuchchicks suggested it may be bilateral slipped tendons. The vitamins would be critical to start right away.

Is it possible for tendons to become loosened by the constant wriggling back and forth? If so, it might be a good idea to put the chick in a sling temporarily.

Is it just the picture or is the hock kind of flat? That is a classic sign of slipped tendon. When you straighten the legs behind the chick like when chickens stretch their legs does the hock look more normal? I really think that looks like slipped tendon.

Just watched the video. Chicks with slipped tendons try to walk on the hock which is what this little one looks like she is trying to do. Look at an article on this site "Treating a chick with a slipped tendon one chicks story". I had this problem last fall. There are step by step directions to treat it.
