I just wanted to say hello to everyone and thank you guys for your answers and discussion. I've been reading the quail forum and researching for my new quail and though I don't have any more questions at this time, I still wanted to say thank you for the indirect advice!

I've got some A&Ms and some silver/tuxedo line eggs in the incubator currently and have some jumbos on order to get some birds established. I've raised lots of chicks, but this is my first foray into quail. I've also been googling the heck out of quail processing, how to cook quail, ideas for quail eggs. I'm super excited! I'm planning to outcross the silvers on the jumbo lines and then try to recover the color, hopefully breeding up the silvers in size and vigor. I just love silver coloration in any form, so eventually hope to have a sustainable covey (that's the right word?) of silver with good size.

Anyway, have read so much on here, felt it was appropriate to introduce myself.

Everyone on her is very helpful on a variety of subjects, do you mind if I ask where you got your A&M's and Jumbo, and if you got them online then what was the min order?

Welcome! Hope to see you on here a lot! I've got a few a&ms but I have mostly coturnix. How many eggs do your a&ms lay?

I ordered off the internet through some NPIP ebay sellers (as I want to keep my NPIP here), and currently just have eggs, no quail yet but soon (hopefully). Received a couple quail cages today, just need to set up some lights and a water container for them. Can't wait.

As for the orders, I got 20, 50, and 100 egg orders, thinking I wanted the silvers (20 eggs), something to cross them on to work towards bigger birds (jumbos) and wanted to raise up birds to eat and to see what I like best for meat (A&M). I am mostly wanting to fill the freezer and provide for our family and some friends. They seem a lot easier to process than chickens, quicker turn around time to butcher/breed the next generation, and the dishes you can make with them sound so yummy. Not to mention they are adorable. Looking forward to it. Several friends are interested in eggs and meat from them, as well.

Thank you for the welcome. I will endeavor not to photobomb the forum too badly when I have little quail in the brooders.

Update:

Candled some of the eggs tonight:

Silver/tuxedo - 20 eggs received, 1 cracked, 19 set - 16 show veining, 3 clears
A&M - 105 eggs received, 0 cracked - candled the 16 and 17 gram eggs of the group (eggs ranged from 13 to 17+) - all developing
Jumbo - 50 eggs received, 3 cracked, 47 set tonight

10 days left on my first eggs. :)

Have any of you used a brooding plate with quail, like an ecoglow? Curious if it works well with them or if you all use heat lamps?

Update: Moved the silver quail into the hatcher tonight. Hopefully will have some silvers by this weekend! I can't wait.

A&Ms are coturnix. They are just a white color phase of coturnix. Coturnix are bred in many colors and patterns like silver, pharaoh (also called brown or wild), tuxedo, Tibetan, and others. Stellar Game Birds has a good web page that shows what the different colors of coturnix look like.

My first Coturnix!

15 hatched of 19 shipped eggs - my first quail hatchlings from the silver/tuxedo eggs, interesting mix. Can't wait to watch them grow. I'll have to get better photos later when it's not 1 in the morning, but here are some camera phone photos I snapped while setting up the starter tank.
