Well I am worried & scared!! I'm almost all ready for my chickens and the coop is in our backyard not all that far from our patio. All this stuff I have been reading about having fly problems from having chickens has me so worried. I am getting 7-9 chickens am I going to have a big fly problem????

In case you need it, there is this chicken lore that the vanilla scented car air fresheners (the ones shaped like Xmas trees) work really well at repelling flies. Don't know if it's true, but I've read that more than once.

Stay on the poop, and you should be fine, though. I sympathize -- I worried about this, too, before my girls arrived.

Right. It's the poop that attracts flies. I keep the poop scooped and deposited in a compost pile, and I have no fly problem at all. If you leave poop lying around, flies lay eggs in it very quickly and almost as quickly, you have more flies. The secret is to deny flies the place to lay their eggs.

Yes I will stay up on scooping poop for sure!! I'm not sure if I want a compost to close around due to it attracting flies. What or where have you been disposing of the chicken poop

I have a dual chamber compost tumbler that I bought at Home Depot for around $100. It works very well and seals the poop inside so it doesn't attract flies.
