Every day when I collect eggs I have to deal with the nasty *** **** on the duck eggs. There is nest in there they can lay eggs in that they don't use as they prefer to lay them on the ground in different areas each time. how do I fix this.

What kind of bedding do they have? What time are they let out of their shelter?

Mine generally lay in the morning before they go outside, and I have pine shavings in the entire night pen. I rarely have an issue with stuff on the eggs.

Sometimes, but not that often.

What kind of nest boxes are you using and where are they located in your coop? And as Amiga asked, what do you use for bedding in the boxes and in your coop?

I have nest boxes on the floor (they don't like to nest up high like chickens) and in a dark space (coop corners). I use hay in them for bedding. And I keep clean hay in all corners of the coop that don't have nest boxes. Keeping the bedding clean is also key to keeping egg clean especially if laid on the floor of the coop.

To get them to use the boxes, I keep a golf ball or two in just a couple of them. This usually helps them get the hang of where they are supposed to lay. Although I do have a few that kick them out of the nest box and I have to put them back in now and then, haha

Learycow has excellent points. The only thing I will add is they have their own preferences so making the nest spots a little different has helped me. One of mine has sawdust, another just cut hay, another a mix of the two. One is fairly bright and open, another is rather dark and set back. another is somewhere in between. They seem to pick and choose a little differently from what I have seen. When they don't like the choices is when they start laying just anywhere has been my experience. Then again mine might just have particularly picky ducks.
