Chicken newbie

Thread Starter

We got interested in chickens when my son joined 4h, we started with broiler chickens those of which we have gotten rid of.  Got these in November.  Can anyone tell me if I am lucky and have any egg layers here.  I think two but unsure.  We also have some Buff Orpingtons, I will take pictures of those when I get home.  Thanks for the help!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I agree with you; it looks to me like you have two pullets (the red and barred bird on the left) and three cockerels. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele

Did a moth know that the flame was going to change her life forever, or did she simply fly towards that heated embrace, knowing it would offer her something she couldn't give herself? In the end, the answer didn't really matter. The moth had never wanted the choice. -Joey W. Hill-

I hope you end up with more hens than cockerels. Are you allowed to keep roosters where you are?

Sorry I can't see the photos well enough even with enlarging them.  What age are your birds at the time photos were taken?  I think you have 3 hens - 2 red and one barred rock.  Possibly a second barred rock if I could see  them better.

You can also post photos at  "what breed or gender is this."  Please do list age - it makes a big difference in ID-ing them.
