Hi all, forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section. I've been trying to figure out where to post for 30 min now

I've had my flock for quite a while, and always bought my chicks at the local feed store. And my hens from friends or local farmers. This is the first time I've actually ordered chicks. I just got confirmation that my 25 chicks (ornamental layer collection), have shipped. I was wondering how long shipping chicks usually takes, and how in the world will I identify the mixed bunch? I am splitting with my friend. I don't want one of us to end up with one breed, while the other has all different kinds

Depending what breed they are theres a good chance they'll all be white or yellow until they're a few weeks+ old. You might have to raise them up for a month or two then decide which ones you want. There's a good chance you'll get a boy or two in there also. Last time I ordered 30 chicks I ended up with I think 4 boys. You won't know that for a month or two either.

Shipping doesn't take nearly as long as it feels like it does. Probably 2 days. your post office will call you when they get in. Pick them up right away and take them home to medicated chick starter and fresh water. Dip each of their beaks in the water so they know what it is and where to find it. They will be fairly dehydrated from the trip and it's their first drink of water ever because for those 2-3 days they're living on the nutrients in their belly from what was left before they hatched.

I'll be sure to have everything ready, and I'll call my post office just in case. Luckily I only live 1/4 mile from the main post office in town. Poor babies, I never thought about it that way, them being without food and water for 2 days

The ornamental layer collection is supposed to have at least 5 different varieties, I think. You should be able to tell them apart (the different breeds) so you and your friend both get a good range of breeds. You may have top hats, feathered feet, extra toes, different down colors, different combs, etc. I don't think either of you will wind up with all one breed.

I'm in Oregon and my MMM orders usually take 2 days to get here.
 
Oh no don't say that! I'm in Texas, now I'm going to be hovering over the phone all day tomorrow, thinking the may come in

Call your post office as soon as possible so they know live chicks are on their way. You can make arrangements ahead of time to pick them up at the PO so the box of chicks don't have to ride in the delivery truck waiting to be dropped off. I hope you don't have any losses, but if you do, contact MMM right away to get either a credit or replacement.

Welcome ! It's fun to get 'mystery chicks' ! My post office gets the chicks in early, and calls me at 6:30 am usually. Let them know that you want a call immediately any time of the day or night ! I turn on the brooder light as I get in the car to pick them up. Mary
