Cleaning hutches for quail

Okay everyone, I think this is my last question before I get some quail. I'd like to know how often you clean the hutches, with what and whether the quail need to be removed when you are doing this?

With all-wire cages they stay pretty clean. You can use a wire brush on them as needed, but everything pretty much falls through. If you do need to clean or sanitize them, you can run a propane torch flame across the wire, much like rabbit keepers do.

I wouldn't bother removing the quail for the wire brush, but it would be a good idea before using the torch.
 
We keep our quail on dirt. Its easier on their tiny feet & they love to dust bathe in it. the kids scoop out the poop everyday with a plastic spoon, which only takes a minute & keeps it from getting too stinky. They're actually in a wire cage. To keep the dirt from falling thru we lined the bottom of the cage with a bunch of shallow cardboard bottoms then filled them with dirt. We put a couple bricks in there that they like to climb up on too.

That sounds like an interesting way to do it. I like the idea of the bricks.

The wire brush sounds appropriate. I've never heard about using the torch, not even with rabbits. But that sounds like an easy method. Is the wire problematic for their feet?

I use 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth and it seems fine. I know some people use 1/2"x1" like in rabbit cages; I'm not sure if that's too big, but I suspect it's fine. I will likely be tractoring them around my yard come spring, so the 1/2"x1" is appealing. I have noticed that they're poops are sometimes too large to drop through the 1/2"x1/2" openings.

Okay, that's larger than I thought they'd need, but of course bird excrement isn't nice round pellets like rabbits.
