Run composting/new chicks

I am planning to start a compost pile in my run this spring using the old bedding from the coop and kitchen/garden scraps.

Around the same time, I will be integrating new chicks to the flock.

My question is, will the old bedding/compost material be harmful to the youngsters?

Nope. they'll scratch around in it and get lots of good stuff from the insects, etc. You'll have happy chicks :)

A good thing to do if you're brooding chicks away from the flock is to introduce some dirt/sod from where the flock roams into the brooder every couple days after the first week. It will expose the chicks to the local flora and fauna of organisms and start to build their immunities and antibodies.

Great article on VENTILATION, one of THE MOST IMPORTANT aspects of coop design.

Fantastic treatise to help decide how much SPACE your chickens need.

Chicken math is not just 'addition'...but also should include Division, Multiplication and especially Subtraction!!!
