Help! Swollen butt, almost size of tennis/soft ball, vent not blocked but don't know what this is or

I just found my chicken with a very swollen butt. I think there might be poop stuck to swollen area. There is also a green color to the swelled area. It is right below vent. I just recently cut her feathers in that area to clean her up, but now the feather seem to be missing or with the swelling it makes it look like they are gone. I don't know what this is or what to do. I am new at this. She is only 9 months old. Please help.

The green is probably bruising around her vent. Can you get her inside into a warm bath with soap, betadine, or epsom salts, aclean off the poop. She may have been vent pecked by the other chickens, or she could have had a prolapse of her cloaca where the vagina and intestines meet, and they could have pecked her because of red tissue sticking out. Get a rubber glove and try to insert a finger an inch or two inside to make sure the vent is open and there is no egg stuck. Try to determine if there is a prolapse, or she was constipated, or attacked. If there is a prolapse, put some honey or hemorrhoid cream on it to help shrink the tissue, and then try to push the prolapse inside. Look for any black or dead tissue that could mean this happened some time ago.

Other hens will peck at any red tissue, but they will also vent peck each other to the point of cannibalism if they are overcrowded, not getting outside, or lacking protein in their diet. A 16% layer feed is the minimum of protein, and some will give extra protein to get it up to 20%. The dangerous thing about poop stuck to the vent, especially in warm weather, is fly strike where maggots can get into the vent and cause damage. I hope she gets better, and it's good that you discovered this. Let us know how she does.
 
Yeah not sure what is going on. Her vent seems fine, just bad swelling underneath. There is also what I se as a bad scab over some of area (black on picture). And then blue/green strings, like veins or possibly dead tissue??

[/IMG][/IMG] decent size run. Select them out usually once a day for 1-2 hours. I feed an organic layer crumble with oyster shell on the side. And I have never noticed any pecking behavior from the others except here and there when eating together or something. So confused and sad.

Her vent looks a liitle swollen, but not prolapsed at this time. Could she have been attacked by a predator? She has that large scab and bruising, so hard to tell what exactly happened. It doesn't look like there is any vent damage so that is great. Her wounds probably would benefit from a warm soak once a day, followed by applying a plain antibiotic ointment.
