I never had much difficulty getting the shells off store - bought eggs that I hard boiled, but I have a "devil" of a time peeling fresh eggs I hard boil. Does any one have a trick that helps get the shells off without taking half the egg white with it?

If you do a search, you will find the answer to this question, but to make it easy.

Two things.

1. Heat the water to boiling before putting the eggs in.

2. place a small pin hole on the pointy end of the egg before you put it in to boil. Becareful, you simply make a tiny punture of the pointy end of th egg.

Like I said, do a search. It's all there.

Yep, do a search! I have Easter egger chickens and they used to be a real bugger to peel!!
Now I use a needle with duck tape on the top part of the needle so I dont poke myself, and I use that to put a hole in the air sack of the eggs and no more problems peeling!!

I just had this discussion with an old timer friend of mine that says to salt the water your boiling in and DO NOT use an aluminum pot, porcelain only.

A summary of what folks say works for them:

1. leave the eggs to age
2. add salt to water.
3. add vinegar to water.
4. steam the eggs.
5. remove eggs prompty and put in ice cold water.

(and all of the above posts)

I believe that the heat causes pressure inside the egg..Which causes bubbles at the hole..So nothing actually enters the egg
