What do you feel for to determine sex of baby chicks? - Page 2

Well, you see, my friend doesn't really care or even know if he wants chickens ... he just bought this new incubator and enjoys playing with it. My chicks have previously all been ordered and I paid $3/ea for them. But I've been running a rooster with them and I think it's pretty remarkable to hatch chickens from your own eggs.

But already I have 7 chickens that are 9 months old, 40 month old chicks, and now I'm getting half of the 24 that have just hatched. I'm hopeful that I can sell that many eggs ... I've got one group that will buy 6-8 dozen per week at $3/doz ... but the way these 47 chickens are eating now I'm doubtful that roughly $20/month income will pay for their feed.

But I've got a new marketing strategy that I'll try about mid summer when I begin getting all these eggs.

When In was free ranging my flock the feed bill went way down but I've already planted onions and the rest of the garden will be planted mid March so until the garden stops producing about mid July I'm going to keep the chickens penned. Although I give the big majority of the garden produce to the chickens anyway ... but I've got to let things mature and the chickens won't allow that.

Since I'm new to the chicken world...I seek advice EVERYWHERE!

I've been told and shown you can take a day old chick, fold out the wing and a girl will have 5 feathers on the end of the wing longer than the rest.  The boys wings will be straight across, all feathers the same length.

Then after they are a few weeks old you hold them and tip them nose down, Boys tail feathers go up and girls will cover up.

I've got 36 eggs in the incubator and in 3 weeks will have to put it too test...
