Guineas and Fire Ants

Can Guineas wipe out a large number or do the ants just crawl up their legs and kill them.......?

My money is on the fire ants. When I lived in S. Carolina I sometimes aimed my Troybilt rototiller at a fire ant nest, let go, and let it roll through. Before it got 1 foot past the nest it was COVERED solid. I think a guinea who got close enough to the nest to do more than pick off strays would be ant fodder. Just my opinion.
 
A single fire ant mound can stop a 30 HP farm tractor dead in its tracts and the tunnels can encompass an acre, and go down to the water table. The only way I can see that Guineas can help with fire ant control is by eating the bugs that fire ants depend on as a protein source to feed their young.

The most satisfying way that I've found to manage fire ant mounds is to drink a 6 pack of cold beer and recycle it on the ant hill. This won't harm the ants in the least but it will make you feel better about playing host and landlord to a mound of fire ants.
