I ordered 16 polish from Ideal and got these twelve chicks as peanuts. Can anyone identify them

Bottom are almost assuredly Production Reds...might be Red Stars, but darker like a Production Red.

Top, black chicks, could be a number of things. Might be Black Stars (sex links) or Australorps or Black Jersey Giants.

Hatcheries will use whatever over stock, and most often, extra roosters, as their packing peanuts.

With the idea that excess roosters are often used (as sworn to by a number of BYCers), I doubt they are sex links unless the hatchery really had a lot of extras of those that day.

But they could be almost anything...however they do look like common layer types rather than extras of a rare breed.

Thank you!

If you get really, really, lucky and the hatchery was pulling from the "exotics" to fill the Polish order, you might have some Black Sumatras.

Look for a pea comb and face that stays really black with some purpling coming into the face as the chick grows.

I agree.

The top ones are likely Black Australorp cockerels. If they are Black Sex Links (Black Stars) they are all females as they lack the white spot of male BSLs on the top of their heads. but it's highly unlikely that Ideal would send females as "packing peanuts." They could be Black Jersey Giants but since Ideal breeds a lot more BAs than they do BJGs, I think it's unlikely. The bottom ones are almost certainly Production Red cockerels.

I got a standard surprise from Ideal last week and I have a few that I am not sure of the breed.
