Morning

My buff Orpington hen has had this eye problem for a while she isn't matured yet and she is the only one in my pen that has this problem sometimes it looks like mucus coming out of her eye I bought a bunch of them I have no idea if they where vaccinated as chicks. Can someone please assist. I live in South Africa and the only antibiotic I know of is terimison? I am still a newbie at this

Hi, if the eye issues is the only symptom, I'd suggest gently bathing the eye and then popping some triple action antibiotic eye drops (for humans) such as neosporin - just ask a pharmacist.

All the best

You may have an upper respitory infection here. If possible, posting a picture of your hen will help a ton in diagnosing her. If her eye is indeed leaking pus, any gunk should be squeezed out. If it is a respitory disease, then she will be a carrier for life, and I would recommend culling before your other birds are infected. (They may well already have it.) Is she coughing or sneezing? Wishing you luck!

If you are on mobile, you can click on the little picture button on the top of the reply box. Once you press it, it will give you the option to select my photos, or something of the like. Click and choose your photo. *You will have to take the picture first.*

I hope I got it right I gave her to one f my employees my heart is broken I phoned the vet and he said if she has been like that for months and there are no other chicken presenting the same symptoms the it's probably wasn't a respiratory infection he told me I can come and get some kits from him and take samples of all of them and we could send them away to a laboratory for testing.

I hate to say this, because it is so rarely true and often misdiagnosed, but it looks like your hen may have eyeworm. Her eye looks similar to that of chickens who have this problem. When you look at her eye, can you see any small, white worms? They will be thin and noodle-like if existent. If you are located where eye worm is an issue, I would ask the vet. Good luck!
