Hello all,

I reside in Texas and we are in the process of building a small 8'L x 5'H x 5'W coop. We aquired a chicken from a relative and hope to get a couple chicks once the coop is done. We are not sure of the chicken's age or gender or breed. I had assumed a hen. Here she is...

Tail feathers are always held high but it doesn't strut around. Like above all the time.

I have read lots of helpful info before joining and hope to learn much more. Thanks!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Nice bird you have there but I too have no clue I'm afraid. Please do post your pics in the what breed gender section. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this
I'm sure other greeters and members will be able to help you.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to joined the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC. I'm not that familiar with that breed. Good luck with him/her. :)

pretty bird, I am thinking it is a pullet with some game bird background. Please post in the " what breed or gender is this." thread for more experienced opinions.

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad to have you onboard with us. I hope you get feedback from other members re: breed and gender.

Welcome.

One chicken is a good start, and yes they sorta need buddys.
So more chickens is an ideal.

But..sometimes the big chicken will pick on the little one being
added to the flock. Need to watch and prepare for that.

Spook
