We are Andriea and Skip and we are soon to be chicken owners. I love to bake and Skip loves to eat eggs, so we figured why not own chickens. We have a few questions of course since we are getting ready to get ready. A couple first question. what happens of you don't give your chickens heat? We are in the Pacific Northwest so what are a couple of the "better" chickens to own for some firs timers? Open to any and all info!

Start always with a good coop.

Keep it draft free, dry and vented. You'll find your
chickens should do quite well really.

Come on over to the forums, look around, ask questions.
You'll find a bunch of members from your general area to
talk with.

Hi and welcome to BYC. If you search for your state thread, you should find other BYC members in your locality and they may be able to make suggestions on breed - try a few breeds to begin with so you can make an informed decision when chicken maths grabs you by the short and curlies!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on Spookwriter; if your chickens are cold hardy breeds, they don't need any supplemental heat in the winter. Just make sure that their coop is draft free, dry, and well ventilated to prevent moisture from building up in it. Feathers are wonderful insulators and moisture is a much greater danger than cold. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I am a rabid fan of Naked Necks, they are very cold tolerant and lay more months than most breeds, but some may not like their funky appearance, so I would recommend checking out Orphingtons, they are pretty cold tolerant and are extremely friendly.
