I have four geese and they hadn't started to mate or lay eggs yet. I was told that I got 1 gander and 3 geese so I was wondering if y'all could help me sex them.

It is hard to tell but looks like you might indeed have one gander and three girls. As far as the mating and laying goes, don't worry about it quite yet. It might be to early for them. Another possibility is that they are secretive about the mating. Some ganders love to brag and others are super private about mating. My first gander wanted the whole neighborhood to know he just got lucky. My current gander doesn't want anyone to know. As to the laying of eggs, do you have a really good nest box set up? If the girls don't like it they might try finding a good spot under a bush or wherever. The girls usually lay about every other day when they get started. Do a check of anywhere they might find a hiding spot and make a nest.

Another thing that might give a clue as to whether they are ready to start is how is the gander acting. Ganders usually get pretty testy and start protecting the girls by standing between you and them. Heads get lowered and hissing starts if they think your out to start trouble. Ganders in mating season are know to be brats. Its just the way it goes. From my experience the ganders hormones are triggered by the females readiness to lay. If the gander is acting up then either the girls are laying or are ready to start laying.

Ganders usually stand with their bill pointed up in the air. The one in the center back of the picture looks like the gander. Females stand with the bill either level with the ground or pointed ever so slightly down when they are calm. The one in the far left of the picture could be either male or female but I am guessing female. Females usually have a thicker shorter neck then the males.

It really does look like 1 gander and 3 girls. That nesting box looks great. Geese sometimes have opinions and might choose something else but it looks like you made a a good nesting area. Only thing to do is search for any hidey spots where they might have started. If nothing is found then just wait.

I guess I'll be searching my 5 acre field for some eggs haha thanks for the input it helps with the confidence a lot

Good idea putting a few eggs in there. Seed eggs frequently work to make a bird choose a nest. I took a few of my goose eggs from last year and blew them out then filled with plaster and use that. For my ducks I used plastic eggs that I filled with sand.

I'll have to try this with some of their eggs this year

Looks like a goose in front, a goose on the right, a goose on the left and the gander being in the middle background ;)
