Another thing that might give a clue as to whether they are ready to start is how is the gander acting. Ganders usually get pretty testy and start protecting the girls by standing between you and them. Heads get lowered and hissing starts if they think your out to start trouble. Ganders in mating season are know to be brats. Its just the way it goes. From my experience the ganders hormones are triggered by the females readiness to lay. If the gander is acting up then either the girls are laying or are ready to start laying.

Ganders usually stand with their bill pointed up in the air. The one in the center back of the picture looks like the gander. Females stand with the bill either level with the ground or pointed ever so slightly down when they are calm. The one in the far left of the picture could be either male or female but I am guessing female. Females usually have a thicker shorter neck then the males.

Only thing to do is search for any hidey spots where they might have started. If nothing is found then just wait.

Good idea putting a few eggs in there. Seed eggs frequently work to make a bird choose a nest. I took a few of my goose eggs from last year and blew them out then filled with plaster and use that. For my ducks I used plastic eggs that I filled with sand.
