Please help me figure out what I did wrong. We tried to extract fluid from one of our hens. I watched several clips posted on you tube and used the same 18 gauge needle they used:( but she didn't make it. Could I have drawn too much fluid?.. I feel so bad but really was trying to help her.:(:(

I've dealt with ascites too. It's awful. Assuming you didn't puncture an organ, you probably didn't screw up at all. if you necropsy a bird that's died of ascites, you'll see how severe the damage to the heart and lungs is by the time the fluid begins to accumulate... The truth is, that once you find an asites bird prostrate, it's more than likely too late. Also important to realize that the stress of handling and treating the bird can easily over tax an already weak heart, and lead to an arrest. I'm sorry you're dealing with it, it is not fun.

Thanks for the kind words... We are truly attached to all of our pets, treat them like they are family so she left knowing she was loved... I will definitely learn more before I ever do this again.
