Coop run ground cover

Quote: You're correct, it's not quite the same.
With a compost pile, or bins, some folks often stop adding material (starting a new pile or bin) and let it rot down farther(finish) before moving to garden.
You could harvest compost for garden from chicken run, but it would be more labor/management intensive.
So maybe the best way to make the most of your chicken poop as garden fertilizer
But like previously stated, 'composting' in a chicken run is more for the good environment for the birds than producing garden fertilizer.

Yes I'm going to do it more for the birds and my nose than for a garden. I am just tired of a muddy run that smells bad. We've planted a garden the last few years and really found we don't have the time to tend to it like you need to. I'll prbly plant some this year just to throw in the run for the chickens.

Yes I'm sick of cleaning out two ton of straw from here coop every week so I got some sand out of the steam and its drying in he sun now so I will get a cat pooper scooper from the dollar store and clean it out every morning people say it's a lot easier and they say it don't smell at all I usually have to open the windows every once in a while just so it don't smell so much they have plea by of ventilation without the Windows but it just don't work

How many birds in how many square feet?

How much is plenty of ventilation?

There are 8 birds in a 4x8 coop and the whole length of the coop at the top there is an two inch gap about two feet long the whole way down the lengthy of the coop up by the roof each in between each 2x2 which the coop is framed out with

So, 2"x 96" = 192 sq inches per side.

192 x 2 = 384 total square inches.

384 / 144 = 2.6 square feet of ventilation for 8 birds...

This may be a issue since many on this list suggest 1 square foot of draft free ventilation per bird as a guide.

Daily cleaning and removing should help.

Well I covered the ground in the run 2 weeks ago. Put leaves, hay, and some pine straw prbly a foot deep. We've had quite a bit of rain since I did it, and I must say its working really good. I got some scratch grains Saturday and threw 3-4 handfuls in there. They have shredded the leaves and all so fine I need to add more. But so far so good.

Good luck bald it's working it's been raining and windy lately I haven't had got to move the coop build the nesting boxes put the siding on the coop and now a turkey showed up at my uncles work and now we have it
