Hi there

Going to be picking a lot of brains on here.

We have 9 chickens ( 3 of which are cockerels). With the exception of mum they are all 9 months old. Getting 3 eggs a day.

We live in Cyprus and have two dogs (both rescue dogs) as well as the chickens. Unfortunately one dog was a street dog and tasted fresh chicken so we have had to partition the garden off as he tries to catch them. The other dogs just lays there and let's them peck her.

Welcome.

Dogs are among my worst predators here.

To start, 3 cockerels is too many for 6 pullets.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on ChickenCanoe; you need to remove 2 of those cockerels. The recommended ratio of roosters to hens is 1 rooster for every 10 hens. As they mature and their hormones kick in, too many roosters will become very hard physically on your hens, over-breeding them, biting and plucking the feathers from their backs and necks, battering them, causing a drop off in egg production, and potentially, seriously inuring them. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching and 1 rooster can easily handle 10-15 hens in that regard. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

People often keep a rooster for protection of their flock. You can see how that goes, three roosters and they didn't try to stop the dog.  I rooster is plenty and if you don't need him for fertile eggs to sell or hatch,  you could replace him for another hen, that does earn her keep.
