20 Mos old Dominique died

So my girls finished their first molt, been missing the eggs!! Giving them peas and BOSS in addition to the layer feed! I checked them yesterday and found one on the floor of the coop next to a very cold egg, she was still warm but eyes closed and definitely deceased! I did not check her vent but there was no noticeable blood anywhere, it looks as if she just dropped dead! Wondering if it's common to get egg bound after a molt, I just can't think of any other reason why she died, these are my first birds and was so proud to not have any problems! Any feedback would be great! I'm just shocked and saddened by this.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry for the loss of your hen. It's always sad to lose one of our flock. :o( Sometimes a chicken will just die for no apparent reason. It's referred to as sudden death syndrome. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with the rest of your flock.

thanks or you reply, I'm really excited to be on this site- Im thinking about adding to my now flock of 4 (two dominickers and 2 australorps) and I know its difficult to add new hens to an already established flock - researching the best way to do it - the Australorps seem to be dominant over the dominiques so would adding a different breed make a difference - was thinking about buff orpingtons, they are pretty and seem to be pretty good layers.

You're welcome. Buff Orpingtons would meke a great addition to your flock as they are a very calm and gentle breed. Just be sure and introduce them slowly and carefully to the flock using the "look but don't touch" method. There is a good article at https://poultrykeeper.com/general-chickens/introducing-new-chickens/ explaining how to do it.

Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry that she died. I lost a chicken a few years ago and it tore me apart. Best of luck! May I recommend a chicken to add? Wyandottes are really friendly and great layers, and tend to get along well with others. However, they are known to have aggressive individuals. (Never encountered one, though.) XD

Welcome! Sorry for your loss.

I set fire to the rain! Watch it pour as I, touched your face. Well it burn while I cried, because I heard it screaming out your name. And I threw us into flames. I knew that was the last time, the last time...I set fire to the rain! -Adele
